As we know someone nasty could change the incoming link to something like "article-1333-sex-viagra-bill-gates" and it would still work.

If there would not be too much overhead, what I suggest we do, is query the database for the correct nice title and compare, if it is different, 304 redirect to the correct link, eg "article-1333-correct-title).

Not only should we do this for correctness, but it will help google index sites and therefore SEO, as it dislikes multiple URLs to the same page and will reduce the score that page can get

Here as some ideas to improve the quality of pretty urls.

I think we should strip common words out of the prettyurl, like "a", "the", "this", "that", as they are no use from a SEO point of view (search engines ignore these), this is called a stopword list and I guess one for each language would be good as well.

FYI fulltext search of mysql has a stopword list as default http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/fulltext-stopwords.html

Also possibly consider a minimum word length of 3 as well for the pretty urls and maximum length of around 100 characters ... more»

I recently created the following article: http://www.yetanothercommunitysystem.com/yacs/article-3446-addthis.com-feeds-link

Notice, the url has "addthis.com", note the ".", we should strip out (or replace with a "-") all non alpha-numeric chars (apart from the "-" used as a seperator), could create problems for example if someone uses a "" could wreck a page that has that a hyperlink.

Also another bug is after edditing an article and submitting the changes, the url shows the id twice.

For google it is better to have NO description tag at all rather than the same one on everypage.

Google does read meta tags, but does not use them for rankings, just information that is displayed.

My suggestion is that we vary the description, using the title and also the Introduction or even a snippet of the page content (possibly user configurable) to generate individual descriptions per page. I don'y know which combinations would ... more»

Having encountered this problem before I knew it was the default php memory limit.
So I simply updated my htaccess file with the following: # Increase memory limit if you encounter a blank screen uploading images

php_value memory_limit 16M This might be worth adding to the htaccess as standard to be uncommented as required.

A while ago I had idea of making privacy policy and about this site into articles.

I was thinking that we could extend this idea further to try and make everywhere that there is text into editable regions for example the help message that you get when creating a new comment or article, or the paragraph of text you get under the "post a new page" heading... in a similar manner to how we can customise the menus now.

Of course would have to consider our internationalisation efforts.

My idea is to store them with relative skins in subfolders, so the html for viewing an article would be in skin/articles/view.php.

Anyhow, I wondered who here uses Linux as a desktop and also for Web development (and in particular for YACS) ?

Has anyone got experience of using AJAX librarys that are about and is there any plans for YACS to use AJAX at all ?

Something I was thinking about in a meet today and that is the ability to categorise the various items that can be attached to an article.

So if I view and image, file or link, I could goto related categories.

Not sure if this fits in with the grand design of YACS or not, but would be a nice feature, as when browsing flickr images for example, its nice to use the tags (categories in yacs) to view related images by category rather than using sections

The only issue is that google will only accept the sitemap from the site root url, but that could easily be fixed by having a sitemap file that simply includes the rss2.php feed file.

http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=34654&hl=en

IMHO this would be a neater solution than using the existing sitemap as its more universal.

Heres some file cache code ive been working on, its litterally a translation of the code for cache to the sql cache table into caching to file.

Its unfinished, ive not even tested it one.
It is ONLY for render output.
The cache size is unlimited.
I need to write a function to delete expired items only (Possibly hook to a use a cron job).
The setup routine is basic.
Also need to implement an option to turn this caching on or use default caching.

I've written this as a seperate class, but I don't really know ... more»
