If you look at index.php, you will see that YACS considers first articles, then list of articles, which are supposed to be less precise and then, less important.

The trade-off for you is to create a list in an article configured to be displayed in an extra box. This can be a fixed list (using usual conventions to create lists) or a dynamic one, using advanced codes (for example, [published=section:123] to list pages published recently in section 123) as described in help page for miscelleanous codes.
