You are right, there are great expectations on SVG. However, to my knowledge the implementation of these is still limited (no native support in IE7), and if you put such a file in every page header, you may bother a quite high number of surfers...

I agree the technology looks very promising and appealing, and that we have to find a clever way to move forward...
