Do I remember? I just made one of these for my 5 year old grandaughter as a birthday present. I grew up in Baltimore city and these skate boxes were king. By the way, this is October 2005 and the kids had no idea what this contraption was. Not even my 31 year old son.
I made it authentic! I dug around at an antique strore and found an old apple orchard crate dated 1958. It cost me 20.00, but just go and try to find a wooden crate that size now-a-days. I found some old Union metal skates in a junk store and proceeded to make the box. You left out one key ingredient, though, in your last description. In the front part of the skate, just below the wheel assembly, there was a small rubber block placed in by the manufacturer for support. As kids, we found out that if you remove the rubber, the wheels would dip just enough to let the box go screaming around a corner. I removed the rubber, assembled the scooter, and vio la, my grandaughter is the first on her block, in her state and probably on the planet who has an official 1950s-1960s skate box. And don't you just know, all the kids at her birthday party had to have a go at it. WHAT MEMORIES!!!
