Fw_crocodile: at the moment it is not considered to translate page nicknames, for the reason you mention. If YACS is looking for the section "covers" to get a cover page, and if this section does not exists, or has a different nick name, the feature will be broken.
If you think that there is an issue in the way strings are shaped today, maybe we should change that to make nick names not visible to translators.
Of course, for all sections created manually, after the installation, you are free to use whatever nick names you need.
