Bernard:
I unzipped the files from the official download (6.9) on my desktop (Windows) and uploaded them to the hosting provider (Unix) using FileZilla. When I edit the files (using an online editor) they look perfectly good. I suspect something is faulty with the PHP at the hosting provider (maybe a dependency is lacking), and this is causing global.php to return gibberish. I'm going to try and narrow it down.
