Thanks very much the polling system works very well and exactly as hoped... the only thing I noticed was that there is no vote control function... meaning that a single person can vote as many times as they want. I'm not sure if that's an issue for me, but it might be for some people.

The poll_with_results function works perfectly for me, but doesn't get listed as one of the options below the appropriate form field so many others won't know about it unless they've been following this thread.

Now that the basic functionality for my site exists I'm playing around with the design, content structure and a few other features. I'm sure I'll have more questions but this time I'll play around with it thoroughly so I don't keep answering my own questions
