Well, this behavior is normal. The 504 error code is part of the HTTP technical specification, and software developers are allowed to use it where applicable. YACS is generating a 504 error to signal the client side that there is no new notification to take into account, as coded on line 210 of users/notifications.php.
This being said, it is likely that the heartbit mechanism will be replaced in the near future, because of the necessity to multiplex AJAX requests sent to the server.
