The 2005 roadmap - 2004 has been a very important year for YACS, because of the so many new features that have been added. Now my own mother has started to use a YACS system to report on family events, and she is new to Internet technologies. However, this powerful package is still a little baby compared to other PHP/MySQL solutions. In 2005 we will have to make it a mature solution -- together. Ideally, I would like my last boy (he's 7) to install his first YACS server on his own. And I am hoping to draw YACS to the attention to many talented PHP and CSS experts as well. Of course we have to add many new things to YACS. Hopefully the agility demonstrated over the last 12 months will help be available to support next developments.  »

You have driven YACS development in 2004 - Since we are closing the year it’s good to review what has been done so far. YACS has evolved tremendously over the last 12 months. And it is my very pleasure to admit that a lot of the new features have been suggested by one of you. Therefore, thank you for your positive input and directions.  »

YACS has less bugs (supposedly) - Open-source advocates have stated for a long time that sharing source files had very good effects on program quality. This http://www.wired.com/news/linux/0,1411,66022,00.html?tw=wn_story_top5. Moreover, while Stanford University computer science researchers have not looked at YACS yet, I'm pretty sure we are already doing better than usual commercial software. 8)  »

Ten things your web sites should be doing - http://www.digital-web.com/about/staff/nick_finck/ wrote on Dec-15th: "Rather than posting about my web predictions for 2005 or rambling off a list of products or tools you must have, etc. I have decided that this year I will post a list of things you should have or be doing on your web site or Intranet. After all, we are living in a modern world, it's time your web sites start acting like it." Ok, lets see how this site -- and, more generally, any YACS server -- compares to http://www.digital-web.com/news/2004/12/ten_things_your_web_sites_should_be_doing/.  »

Why should you suggest your boss to switch to YACS? - Is your company looking for an open-source platform to support intranet web servers? Ok, you have checked all major solutions available today, from those recommended by CMSWatch to those listed at DMOZ. Can we suggest to consider YACS as well? You may be surprised by the number of features that do match corporate needs. Well, actually YACS has been used to support some intranet web sites for about 18 months, and therefore we do have the experience of such things.  »

YACS adds authentication to the Comment API - When posting a comment through a newsreader your web site will basically receive a mail address and a name. This may be enough to report on author information in the comment itself. But this is also an open door to comment spammers. Therefore, YACS extends this mechanism with true poster authentication.  »

How to derive the categories tree from search requests? - Aside of the several sections used to post articles on this site, and of the search engine based on full-text indexation we already have, the categories tree is a very handy mean to navigate among all these pages. Years ago Yahoo! built its success on a manual classification of pages. Of course, we are supporting such sweating efforts at YetAnotherCommunitySystem. But we also have improved the classification process thanks to the search engine. Search and click, that is all that is necessary to expand our categories tree.  »

Look Ma, YACS has no group to manage access rights! - Look at other blog or CMS packages. Do you know one that does not feature user groups? But YACS has been built with other paradigms in mind. If you want a personal blog, a simple personal account is enough. And if you want to actively support a community, you can benefit from the scalability of the YACS approach, featuring following classes of user profiles: Associate, Member, or Subscriber.  »

How does YACS compare to Wiki? - The first ever wiki site was created for the Portland Pattern Repository in 1995. That site now hosts tens of thousands of pages. According to the http://wiki.org/wiki.cgi?WhatIsWiki page, Wiki is the simplest online database that could possibly work. Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly. YACS, like Wiki, has been created to let people express themselves on the web. Therefore both systems have a lot in common. However, YACS architecture differs significantly from a Wiki system.  »
