A dynamic web site platform which allows an individual or community of users to publish, manage and organize a variety of content, YACS integrates many popular features of content management systems, weblogs, collaborative tools and discussion-based community software into one easy-to-use package.
As an open source software project maintained and developed by a community, YACS is free to download and use. If you like what you learn here, please work with us to expand and refine YACS to suit your needs.

YACS helps people to share information

As other Content Management Systems (CMS), YACS has been designed from the outset to help knowledgeable people to publish valuable information, and to ease the retrieval of data. But compared to other packages, YACS has some specific features that, together, makes a very efficient and versatile solution.

YACS features aiming to share information:
  • Select your preferred tool to upload articles: web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Lynx, ...), w.bloggar (on Windows), mobile weblogging tool (on PalmOS), or bookmarklet
  • Add any number of images, files or links to any article
  • Full-featured commenting system
  • Link any article to several categories; semi-automatic classification by keywords
  • Integrated full-text search engine
  • The home page automatically list most recent publications
  • Several newsfeeds (RSS) are available to spread the word

A wide range of site configurations

By enabling and configuring individual modules, an associate can design a unique site, one which can be used for a combination of knowledge management, web publishing and community interaction purposes. Some examples:

-  Content management. Via a simple, browser-based interface, members can publish articles, comments, files, links and images. Associates can choose from multiple theme templates or create their own to give the site a singular look and feel. YACS as a simple but efficient flat set of sections to anchor articles. Also, it has a very flexible classification system that allows hierarchical classifications, cross-indexing of posts and multiple category sets for most content types. Access to content is controlled through administrator-defined user permission roles. Published articles can be accessed through the home page, through sections, categories, or even while browsing user profiles. Separate RSS feeds are available for each display type. Users can also keyword search the entire site.

-  Weblog. A single installation can be configured as an individual personal weblog site or multiple individual weblogs. YACS supports the Blogger API, provides RSS feeds for each individual blog.

-  Discussion-based community. A YACS site can act as a Slashdot-like news site and/or make use of a traditional discussion forum. Comment boards make it simple for members to discuss new posts.

Basic installation requirements

The YACS core platform, additional plug-in modules, and many skins are freely available for download under the GNU LGPL. YACS, written in PHP and using MySQL as the database backend, has been tested behind Apache on Windows and Linux platforms.

Jeff57: Yes, this is provided for free, with a LGPL licence, meaning you can use it, as it is or modified, for free. However, please do not think that Open Source software means "no money". For any good server, you will have to pay for the time of people dedicated to it, from designers to content managers, end-user training, etc. and that's a lot of money.
