Sections and Categories - still don't understand
Call me stupid, but i don't get it.
Is it the case that any content/articles to a site posted by a member appears in a defined section. So when you click create a page, it lists the sections which articles can be posted to. Categores don't appear here?
A category, categorises the content of the site, so it acts like a container, gathering various content? For example, weekly or monthly articles which is automatically generated.
But how else does content appear in categories? When you create a category, what next? How is content included in it?

| Bernard from nearby-an-airport Associate, 6728 posts | Any article is anchored to one, and only one, section. This is why YACS asks for a selected section when you create an article. Categories, on another hand, are aiming to link pages intelligently. YACS manages weekly and monthly publications automatically. But you can create any number of categories and link pages accordingly. To create a category, you can browse the tree of categories and click on the link to add a new category where necessary. An alternate method is to search for some keyword as an associate, and, from the resulting page, to click on the link to make a category out of it. To link a page to some categories, browse the page first. Then, look at the side box for categories and click on the link Assign categories. On the next page you can add or suppress links to categories. Does this answer your requirement? |
| Monkey 16 posts | Bernard: Yes, I think so. So basically, articles are assigned to categories via links, and that's it? Users don't post to categories, but in appropriate sections. And articles can be accessed via the site map > sections. There's two ways at least of accessing article/content: sections & categories Categories allow you to collect together and display the content differently from sections? Is this how I should understand things? On another matter: When I pressed the 'assign category' link when viewing an article, I got the following error [taken out my details]
Fatal error: Cannot use object of type Article as array in [...]\yacs\categories\select.php on line 72 Also, when I create a sub-category, get the following type of error at the top of the page, though the sub-category gets created:
Warning: array_merge() [function.array-merge]: Argument #1 is not an array in [...]\yacs\sections\edit.php on line 197
Warning: array_merge() [function.array-merge]: Argument #1 is not an array in [...]\yacs\sections\edit.php on line 200

Bernard: Additionaly, is the layout of the sections/site map hard coded in the theme. At the moment it has a two column type display Can it be changed, so more like a simpler menu/tree structure? thanks |

Monkey : You are right, another way to describe things: sections are containers of articles, while categories are specialized lists of articles. Thank you for the reporting on bugs. Let me check it please... |

Monkey : Look at the code, and you will see that this is actually a set of two definition lists. The only thing you have to do is to change the CSS file for the style used for these definition lists in the page... |
