31st July, that's Yacs Summer English Session

Actually, a catch-up conversation

Jul. 31 2008

NickR
Hello all. on Jul. 31
ThierryP
hello alone :p
how are you nick ?
ready for this session ? on Jul. 31
NickR
Hello
I am good, ready and waiting, I suspect there will not be many people. on Jul. 31
Bernard
Hello World on Jul. 31
NickR
Hi on Jul. 31
Bernard
How are you doing these days? on Jul. 31
NickR
Good, had a weird few weeks. Brother-in-law wedding, then grandma-in-law died a few days after, then spent a few days away camping on the coast with family.
Scarlett is BIG - 73cm tall only 7 months only.
:D on Jul. 31
Bernard
camping with the baby? on Jul. 31
NickR
Yes, in my parents caravan though on Jul. 31
Bernard
Ah, you meant civilized camping... on Jul. 31
NickR
Yeh, I prefer the tent, beer and mud
How was your holidays ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
Good, thank you
I have worked on yacs almost every night of the second week... on Jul. 31
NickR
You are like John Carmack (Quake/Doom) he took his laptop on his honeymoon on Jul. 31
Bernard
Is he a relative of you? on Jul. 31
NickR
LOL no.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_D._Carmack on Jul. 31
Bernard
By the way, I have planned to switch to another laptop, based on Mac OS X. Very curious to test this flavor of Unix as a software development environment. on Jul. 31
NickR
Do you like OS X ?
I think it is very slick on Jul. 31
Bernard
Well at home we already have one iMac and 2 MacBooks... on Jul. 31
NickR
You can always bootcamp windows on Jul. 31
Bernard
I am definitely looking for virtual machines. Maybe not with Bootcamp...
Are you using a Mac yourself? on Jul. 31
NickR
No, Currently XP. I like OS X though. I have an old iMAC on my desktop collecting dust.
I do not think anyone else will be here for the chat tonight - I guess because its summer. on Jul. 31
Bernard
Ok
Well, then we can focus on your potential issues with yacs, if any? on Jul. 31
NickR
For 8.6 ...
time out problems trying to upgrade from yacs.com
maybe too many files now ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
sure, do not try to do that! on Jul. 31
NickR
I was thinking maybe its better to load a zip or tar file to inbox instead of all individual files ?
from yacs.com on Jul. 31
Bernard
Yes, this is the right way to go.
Upload an archive directly from the web form, or through FTP in the inbox/yacs directory on Jul. 31
NickR
Yes, I did the ftp method.
for 8.6.30 on Jul. 31
Bernard
you mean, 8.6beta30.31 on Jul. 31
NickR
LOL yes that one on Jul. 31
Bernard
The numbering scheme deserves some explanation...
8.6 is for June of 2008
beta is what i am supposed to deliver...
the next number is the day in month for the release
I had to stop at the end of June, and restart on July
Therefore, the 8.6beta30.21 is the archive generated on the 21st of July, ten days ago... on Jul. 31
NickR
on Jul. 31
Bernard
Of course, this is working because we won't have a 8.7 version, and switch directly to the 8.8 during August.
And August is starting ... tomorrow morning! on Jul. 31
NickR
Do you think we are ready for release yet ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
Almost, yes...
In the background of this chat i am updating the SVN repository at Google Code.
Earlier today files used for translation have been updated as well. on Jul. 31
NickR
You sure have been working hard ! on Jul. 31
Bernard
The only missing part is the update of this site, but I will do that after the end of this chat
Actually a very large portion of the software has been reviewed, checked, improved, etc.
Just to give some examples of most recent improvements:
  • some scripts have been added yesterday to help customize the .htaccess through a web interface

  • the purge of links added through RSS feeds is now ok

  • some queries have been proven slow in the module for links, and this has been updated two days ago..

etc. on Jul. 31
NickR
Cool.
Hi Debs. on Jul. 31
Deb smith
Hello everyone on Jul. 31
NickR
How are you, is there anything we can help you with ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
Deborah, are you still working on http://www.write2imageplus.com/ or not? on Jul. 31
Deb smith
yes...........we were able to get the pictures the way they needed to be, thank you for your help with that
I am doing well.........thank you for asking, and yourself? on Jul. 31
Bernard
Good to know on Jul. 31
NickR
The server appears to have had a hick-up ! on Jul. 31
Christian
hello everyone on Jul. 31
Bernard
... no service for some minutes, despite good network connection ... on Jul. 31
NickR
Hi Christian on Jul. 31
Bernard
Hello Christian
I will try to move this server back to decent hosting company in France ASAP... on Jul. 31
NickR
Bluehost not good ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
... as you've seen some minutes ago. on Jul. 31
Christian
ovh ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
Nick, I also forgot to mention that yacs has been validated against a Google search appliance we have plugged into our intranet.
The right opportunity to better analyze SEO constraints locally, and to update the software to make it more friendly to search engines...
Christian, yes we could go to OVH... on Jul. 31
NickR
Cool, we used to have one.
Do you use YACS much at your company ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
more and more i would say...
We have big plans for the second half of the year but it is a little bit too early to discuss these publicly on Jul. 31
NickR
I would love to work on YACS for £££
Only way that would happen is if I start a business... on Jul. 31
Bernard
Well, you could...
I have some colleagues who are looking for specific pieces of software for our yacs server.
Based in UK...
I mean, these colleagues are based in UK... on Jul. 31
NickR
I would be very interested !
I have found out that I am going to loose my job next year, approx march Been thinking about starting my own business up. on Jul. 31
Bernard
Ok, how to start then?
I suppose you need to expose some of your references, etc. on Jul. 31
NickR
Would it be best to email me general info about what is needed, so I can say if it is possible for me to do ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
ok, we will do exactly that then on Jul. 31
NickR
(as well this is a public chat !) on Jul. 31
Bernard
You will have to learn more about yacs 8.6 then... on Jul. 31
NickR
I was thinking of starting a business up slowly in my spare time, see how well/bad things go, then I can decide next year what I want to do.
As an 8.6 learning process, I could update/write documentation ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
sure!
Christian, any issue on your yacs server to report on? on Jul. 31
NickR
If you could provide me with pointers as whats new/needs updating in for documentation will be able to start asap (I did mention about doing this last month). on Jul. 31
Christian
I just begin to test the last version and I don't note any bug yet on Jul. 31
Bernard
Nick, I believe the private pages would be a good start on Jul. 31
NickR
How about a detailed guide of whats new in 8.6 ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
well, there are so many changes...
But actually, the 8.6 is about fixing bugs, and all new things are improvements to existing code.
Private pages have been derived from previous code (on-demand chat), but modified to make them more practical and efficient. on Jul. 31
Christian
I'm going to sleep. I want to work early tomorow with fresh air
bye bye on Jul. 31
Bernard
Bye Christian.
Nick, if we close this chat early I would be able to migrate this site to the very last version of yacs 8.6beta30.31... on Jul. 31
NickR
Sure go for it. I shall go and make a start on documentation. on Jul. 31
ThierryP
great, maybe final version ? on Jul. 31
NickR
Re: 8.6 new features since last stable release would be best. on Jul. 31
NJ
hello on Jul. 31
NickR
Hi NJ. on Jul. 31
Bernard
Thierry, we will have to stop on 8.6 improvements at some point, and this is today. Except in case of major bug discovered next week, but this is very unlikely to happen because of the two months spent on tests...
Hello NJ
Also, we have to think about the next major release, to be developed during the second half of 2008... on Jul. 31
NJ
I dont have much to add, except that YACS have allowed us to put together some very well received websites by our community..........hi nick and bernard on Jul. 31
Bernard
Thanks for the feed-back. on Jul. 31
NJ
write2image plus still has some problem with rendering in firefox for some reason looks good in explorer though
write2image plus still has some problem with rendering in firefox for some reason looks good in explorer though on Jul. 31
NickR
Bernard, I have spotted a minor issue (not a bug)... on Jul. 31
Bernard
Tell me on Jul. 31
NickR
On this chat, we have nick names, but in participants we have real names, I did not realise nj = steve. on Jul. 31
Bernard
Yes, initially only nick names were used, but in corporate environment it makes sense to display full names. on Jul. 31
NickR
nick names, i meant user names. on Jul. 31
Bernard

Would you like to use fullnames everywhere? on Jul. 31
NickR
No, but maybe they could come up as the mouseover tooltip ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
Good idea instead! on Jul. 31
NickR
Eg for NJ comment would be "Maurer Steve, see member profile"
in this chat
and opposite for the participants list. on Jul. 31
Bernard
Do you agree to let full names in the list of participants, providing nick names + mouseover tooltip are used in the chatting area? on Jul. 31
NickR
Sure on Jul. 31
Bernard
ok, maybe i should do that right now, in the background... on Jul. 31
NickR
LOL, I can't multitask after 7pm !
or before 10 am... on Jul. 31
Bernard
This is quite easy, you just have to slice your time. This is what computers are doing, as you know... on Jul. 31
NJ
thierry.............totem is a very useful skin on Jul. 31
ThierryP
really ?
You use it ? on Jul. 31
NJ
yes, when you have a chance go to www.newportlaptopcard.com on Jul. 31
ThierryP
Soon up to date

Bernard
This is wht the VDP logo is displayed at the bottom of the site... on Jul. 31
ThierryP

What ? on Jul. 31
Bernard
Thierry, at the bottom of the http://www.newportlaptopcard.com/ page there is the small VDP Designed image. on Jul. 31
NickR
on Jul. 31
Bernard
Maybe Steve is working for you after all, who knows? on Jul. 31
NJ

I have learned alot about SEO from translating Thierry's yacs writings into english on Jul. 31
NickR
Bernard, BTW, I already have a list of ideas for YACS 9.1 on Jul. 31
Bernard
Nick, what kind of ideas? on Jul. 31
NickR
base workflow class, that can be extended, to things like comment moderation, article publication approval, overlay data flow etc... on Jul. 31
NJ

ThierryP
or, the little logo, it's my monney my seo monney :p on Jul. 31
NickR
better/unified/refactored overlay/article extensibility on Jul. 31
ThierryP
it's a free back link for me lol on Jul. 31
NickR
refactor html generation code (I see many spots where menus are duplicated for example on Jul. 31
NJ
refractor html generation code...........whoa!!............what the hell is that? on Jul. 31
NickR
NJ, you see the code that generates the buttons below...
sorry, you see the buttons below... on Jul. 31
NJ
yes on Jul. 31
Bernard
Nick, sure, I am open to many things as you know on Jul. 31
NickR
well the code that generates that in the chat code is almost identical to the code that is used in normal articles, so we could modularise it better IMHO, so that it is only written once. on Jul. 31
NJ
got it, thanks on Jul. 31
NickR
Bernard, make the gui code polymorphic, so all you need to do is inherit and extend the button code below, rather than duplicate on Jul. 31
Bernard
Nick, once again: yes
... providing you contribute to this efforts. on Jul. 31
NickR
Well, I will have to help, if I am to try and make £££ on Jul. 31
Bernard
A win-win situation, obviously... on Jul. 31
NJ
it is so hot in manhattan today on Jul. 31

NJ

our main office is in New Jersey about 15 minutes outside of manhattan
I am going to be in Europe in September Denmark and Sweden (for those that care on Jul. 31
NickR
I think that overlays and layouts could benefit from being unified, or atleast share/extend same/similar interfacecs
Nice, having a little baby means my holidays will be in southern england.
But should be cool as going to a wedding and visiting various family and friends, nice and relaxing on Jul. 31
Bernard
Steve, that's a very nice place to be, IMHO... (remembering my marathon in NYC in 2003) on Jul. 31
NickR
I have 2 ideas for skins as well.
Drupal and a Wordpress skin... just to prove we can be like them if we want to be on Jul. 31
NJ

Bernard

Bye Nick on Jul. 31
NJ
Bernard, u are like lightning fast!!
i couldnt run 26 miles in 20 hours on Jul. 31
Bernard
Well, you know,if you talk to a real runner, he will probably not say exactly that... on Jul. 31
NJ
lol on Jul. 31
Bernard
I would love to go back to NYC...
Well, there are many interesting places on Earth, but NYC rocks! on Jul. 31
NJ
well, thank you again for YACS, i have ideas (especially for mobile yacs with a server tie in) but i realise its getting late in Paris. plus, I only have market knowledge no tech knowledge on Jul. 31
Bernard
Maybe when YACS will have a better coverage there, sooner or later?
Mobility may be the most important change to yacs in 2009... on Jul. 31
NJ
I think USA could be a killer market for YACS...........we are just waking up to the fact that Microsoft is not a religion. on Jul. 31
Bernard
So if you can help us to mature on the topic, do not hesitate to share your findings. on Jul. 31
Bernard
Take care, you are creating some hype here... on Jul. 31
NJ
understood, take care all on Jul. 31
Bernard
ok guys I will now close this session, and update the software to yacs 8.6beta30.31...
Many thanks for the interactions of tonight. We will do that again no later than early September anyway. on Jul. 31
NJ
good night on Jul. 31
Bernard
This page will be locked in one minute, and the server will be upgraded just after. So, it may be the right time to consider pending activities not related to this site for the next hour or so...

ThierryP
