Podcasting

timster -- on Mar. 11 2005
Yacs fan!
Broadcasting info from your site
Bernard,

Thanks greatly to your site my site http:www.techcolosseum.com is proceeding along nicely. I still have some tweaks (and inevitably some questions for you but for once I'm not going to pose a question but rather point out a technology that some people with websites out there might want to take a closer look at, namely podcasting.

If you don't know what it is, check here: http:log.hugoschotman.com/hugo/podcasting/index.html essentially what it is is MP3 audio broadcasting from your site.

Have you ever been struggling to write some content for you website, and just wish you could verbally explain it to your readers? Or did you want to ad some verbal expressions and innovation to your content that the written word has difficulty to get accross. Or verbal interviews with customers, experts etc... then you should consider podcasting.

If there are any code monkeys reading this you can also consider the technologies being used to turn podcasts into organised feeds for distribution accross the web. See here: http:log.hugoschotman.com/hugo/podcasting/index.html

Personally I own a flash MP3 player from iAudio that has a line in that can convert audio directly to MP3 format, so I suspect I'll be playing around with podcasting shortly myself!

Heya Heya from Oliver Shanti (30 seconds extract) 240,576 bytes, 1945 downloads
This song is coming from the album Well Balanced, released in 1995 by Sattva Music. Even if it quite short, it may give you an idea of how relaxing this music is to software developers...

Actually, YACS is enabling podcasting for a while. To illustrate that point I have uploaded a short MP3 file to this page and, of course, it is available for direct download.

But also, if you visit the index of feeds (one of the modules listed at the Control Panel), you will see that YACS has a RSS feed for public files.

And, of course, this feed does feature the enclosure tag that is necessary to enable downloads.

Moreover, this has been made available into YACS not only for listeners. By applying same principles you can push any kind of files (including PDF or ZIP files) to any number of hosts.

To summarize, if you want to use YACS as a podcasting platform:
  • attach files to pages as usual
  • YACS allows regular web surfers to download files on-demand
  • YACS also has a RSS feed for Doppler, etc.

Does this fulfill your requirement?

Bernard:

It sure will. Also thanks for the article on the front page with the explanation... I think this very useful information to show what a cutting edge CMS YACS is

Timster: Thank you for the kind words. By the way, are you considering some P2P software for podcasting? Just curious to see if Bittorrent would be an opportunity to extend YACS...

Bernard:

I'm not sure yet about the whole Podcasting thing, I was just giving some thought to the roadmap of functionality of my site and that occurred to me as a logical possibility.

Right now my site is still in the "needs tweaks" phase, but starting to build up content, and about to enter a marketing/promotional phase.

As usual I've got a few questions but I'll post them in their own topics.

Cheers,

Tim

Timster: All the best for your new site. If you are successful to promote it, maybe you could help me as well for the promotion of mine
