Bernard
Hello everybody, and welcome to this web meeting. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Sorry for the interruption, our Internet service provider has played with the back-end database server for about half-an-hour
insult on Apr. 10
N1ckR
I noticed - not been able to login on Apr. 10
Bernard
Hello Nick, the cPanel from Blue Host was reporting zero database for my account. What a shock!
How are you doing these days? on Apr. 10
N1ckR
Busy busy busy. But not too bad really. Had a a few days off work this week, spent lots of time with my little daughter and looking at biggers houses to buy and thinking about installing linux again on Apr. 10
Bernard
Spring time...
Not sure we will be so many tonight, so if there is some topic you would like to discuss with me, just let go... on Apr. 10
N1ckR
On Mondays meeting I saw you mentioned about chief tester... on Apr. 10
Bernard
yeap, this is the most important lack in the team at the moment
I would be ready to offer a place of associate at yetanothercommunitysystem.com for our next test manager, would you be interested? on Apr. 10
N1ckR
Yes, of course, but we need to discuss strategy and how it fits in with release schedule and project management on Apr. 10
Bernard
Ok, no problem. What would be your first question? on Apr. 10
N1ckR
how frequently will we release ? on Apr. 10
Bernard
Major versions are due two times a year.
Next major release is planned for June, aka yacs 8.6. on Apr. 10
N1ckR
minor versions monthly ? on Apr. 10
Bernard
Ideally we will have alpha, beta and gamma versions. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
hey folks. Sorry i'm late. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Hello Stephan, glad to see you. on Apr. 10
N1ckR
Hi. Stephan. on Apr. 10
Tof
hello guys on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
So the monthly updates will be bug-fixes mostly? and then the major updates will be more feature oriented? on Apr. 10
N1ckR
Bernard, I will write a list of questions/suggestions to discuss later about testing on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
Hey Nick/ToF/Bernard on Apr. 10
Bernard
  • Alpha versions can come at any time, and non-regression are minimal. Basically : capability to install a fresh server.
  • Beta versions have more non-regression tests, and allow for upgrade, localisation is finalised, etc.
  • Gamma versions have to be introduced to validate "stable" versions, two times a year.
on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
I think i will be mostly sticking to Gamma Versions on my live server from now on. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Normally, monthly releases are all at the beta level. But we need to work on gamma tests now to be ready by June...
Yes, Stephan, you are learning by experience on Apr. 10
N1ckR
Bernard, if we plan on montly betas, then we need a stable branch that is gamma + bug fixes only. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Nick, this should not be an issue thanks to the SVN system we have now at Google code. It's only a matter of organization.
Also, the idea is to stop new development on the monthly release that precedes a major version, to have only bugs fixed during one month.
For example, after the 8.5 due end of May all code changes would be dedicated to bug fixes before releasing the 8.6. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
I need to edit that bug report on forms. on Apr. 10
N1ckR
At some point we have to have a feature freeze to allow time for final testing before gamma release.
Touche Bernard ! on Apr. 10
Bernard
In my opinion, we can afford to stop development for one month, if this helps to limit the overhead on branch management, etc. This is the feature freeze you are talking about. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
That sounds like a prudent course. It insures that you regroup regularly and always have a recent stable version of the code to market. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Hello Tof, glad to see you too. on Apr. 10
NJ
Hi everyone on Apr. 10
Bernard
Hello NJ on Apr. 10
N1ckR
I suppose we better stop talking about releases and ask if anyone has any problems or needs help with YACS ? on Apr. 10
NJ
How about forms, can you create forms without html? on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, this is the purpose of the new module actually. on Apr. 10
Deb smith
Good day everyone. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
Well.. most of my problems with YACS... relate to little things that frustrate, more than the code being bad. on Apr. 10
NJ
I tried but i could not figure out the GUI. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Hello Deb on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
I was able to use the form tool with some effort. I have to finagle URLS or turn off the rewrite.
Hey Deb. on Apr. 10
Deb smith
Is there a way to move the "menu" from either the left/right to the bottom of the page? on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
Big problem on my site, now that emails are flowing again, is that members can't be grouped. And profiles can't be limited by Associates.
It'd be ideal for me to be able to send notices to 'poets' vs. 'writers'
or to create subscriptions on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, you first have to create a form, and use the second tab to add fields on screen. Once a form has been created, it is visible in the overview at the Control Panel, and you can then use it to capture content. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
The content gets stored in a section as a page. It was fairly useful.
I'm actually going to use it to create a submission form for my contest. on Apr. 10
NJ
Ok, thanks once it is in the Overview, what do you do from there? on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, you can click on the 'Forms' link to access all forms, and then use the one you want. on Apr. 10
NJ
Ohhhhh, I think I undestand ........sorry a little slow brained here on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
the problem i have is that with the rewrite on, the links don't work on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, no problem, we are here to help. beer
Deb, the menu has the DOM id "main_menu", and this means you can make a lot of things with adequate CSS rules. on Apr. 10
N1ckR
AnsteyER - Definable user groups - that is a good feature request on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, please copy manually the .htaccess file that is in the last archive. The previous version had nothing about forms. Please note that yacs never touch this file during upgrades, it would be too intrusive in most situations. I guarantee that forms do work with rewriting... on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
i exist to please. (I think i already submitted that one) on Apr. 10
NJ
just one more question my kind YACS friends, if I want the JOI skin to have a white appearnces instead of grey in the main body....which .jpg file should i update? i keep trying to change files ans never get it right. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
i forget where that is.. one sec, let me find it and test. on Apr. 10
Deb smith
thank you Bernard. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, are you talking of the hashed grey in the background of the page, like in http://www.yetanothercommunitysystem.com/skins/test.php?skin=joi on Apr. 10
NJ
This is nice............to speak in English just this once on Apr. 10
Tof
By the way Bernard, is there a section dedicated to yacs sites security on yetanothercommunitysystem.com ? it would be helpful to list things to do to have a safe website (permissions, htaccess, ...) on Apr. 10
NJ
Yes Bernard on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
i get very frustrated with finding and turning off the stuff in the right column. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, with Firefox, righ-click on the background, then 'View background image'. The address of the image, as picked from the address bar of the browser, is skins/joi/images/code_background.gif on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
where is the newest htaccess file? in the tar for 8.3? on Apr. 10
Bernard
Tof, there are some pages in the documentation, and even a cross-"security" category. But all this should be expanded, of course. By the way, YACS does not rely that much on .htaccess to secure data. The file is mainly used for URL rewriting at the moment. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
does it update with the update scripts? should there be a copy on my server? and if so, what's the mod date?
or version number. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, yes, it is part of the archive. And no, it is not updated automatically. on Apr. 10
NJ
Bernard, I tried that but one part (towards the left) stayed grey, but the middle stayed white, but I will go back and try that, on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, good luck. on Apr. 10
NJ
Merci Beucop on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, back on your previous requirements for groups, etc. I am working on an important feature at the moment to allow the post of messages to sections and to categories. Actually, either to editors of a section, or to members of a category. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
That did it. The URLS magically work now. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Posting a message to a section will mean 'post a message to people collaborating to a web space'. on Apr. 10
N1ckR
htaccess could have additional rules (eg I have some domain redirects), so unwise to be part of the upgrade process or some settings for compability on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
that is great. on Apr. 10
Bernard
And posting to a category would solve your issue on routing messages to poets, etc.
Nick, that's right, this is why YACS does not touch this file by himself. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
Right. Makes sense. I still feel that the communications, which works fine, needs to be presented differently. I think that relates to your current project and any groupings of users. on Apr. 10
Tof
'post a message to people collaborating to a web space'! great ! that means that a section is a group by itself in a way. on Apr. 10
Bernard
exactly on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
new members struggle mightily with internal messaging. on Apr. 10
NJ
it would nice to be able to extend the YACS chat feature to mobile users (WM6, Symbian, Blackberry. Then YACS could be used as a Help Desk for Mobile users. on Apr. 10
N1ckR
Well its something I mentioned a while ago and that is being able to categorise everything, images, articles, files and users..
maybe that would e a way to make user groups ? on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
a user is really just a kind of group.
er article sorry. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, mobility will come to yacs, definitely. But when and how, that's still an open question. Sending SMS has a cost you know...
Nick, when you add tags to a user profile you are actually placing it in a category...
Social software is an example of this... on Apr. 10
NJ
Understood, but just as a IM client, no SMS. Jst over a TCP client on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, that is a good idea actually. Widget first, then PDA... on Apr. 10
N1ckR
NJ, that would imply some kind of IM server integration. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
You know... Why can't I email people who select their own tags like this? on Apr. 10
N1ckR
would have to be open platform , Jabber ? on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
If I could email everyone with a 'poet' keyword, voila, i've got a mailing list. on Apr. 10
Bernard
NIck, one way to go is to bridge Jabber with the MySQL back-end. Not a big deal apparently, but not available at all ISP of course... on Apr. 10
NJ
or Blackberry messenger on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, this will come, promised! on Apr. 10
NJ
, thanks, I will calm down on Apr. 10
Bernard
I also have some questions to you actually.
And the first one is: why and how are you using this software package coming from France, at the end of the day? on Apr. 10
NJ
I am using YACS to have my clients download Postscript file for printing, works great
I on Apr. 10
Bernard
(Steve, you can click on the # character to edit your post if needed) on Apr. 10
NJ
looked long and hard, Joomla, Moomla, Drupal, sUPAL..........EVERYTHING. YACS is so far ahead. I have corporate clients in the USA that have had there jaw dropped with some of the capabilities. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
OH, that google bug drives me nuts.
The way the maps no longer center. on Apr. 10
Tof
even if Yacs was an english/german/japonese  project, i will still use it to program web applications for my customers, because yacs is the tool i was looking for. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, yes this one has to be fixed by end of this month. on Apr. 10
NJ
It out "Sharepoints", Microsoft sharepoint.........great for storing and organizing internal documents and traing tools like training videos on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, do you have many postscript files to share? on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
sweet! Where do I tag users, I did it at some point, but I have no memory of where it is/ on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, it's in the edit form for users, look a second time... on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
found it.
assign categories on the right side of the user form. on Apr. 10
NJ
Yes, I work with a lot of Anoto files(digital pen files) .pad file and yes, I work .ps files alot. YACS handles this all. on Apr. 10
Bernard
yes, you can either assign categories aside, or update the TAGS field in the middle of the page... on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
I have not checked this recently, but does the xml feed recognize blogger at this point? It didn't a few weeks ago?
Ooh ok. on Apr. 10
N1ckR
NJ - Nice to see YACS been used for something different. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, I supose you have added the extension .pad in the configuration panel for files? If you like, we could have a standard support for these files, with some pointers to suitable tools to be used after download, etc. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
MY suggestion on this Bernard... Is that you add an associate tagging system. so that we can tag members into a group, identical to that, but so the user can not define it themselves. (otherwise, we can't have an 'associate' group or whatever, they'd all assign themselves that group. on Apr. 10
NJ
But of course, if I can help let me know.............yes I have added the additional extentions. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, this is why I am thinking about distinguishing tags, for folksonomies, from category assignments. Category assignments would become reserved to associates, at least for user profiles. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
OOOOH, I found a major problem with our solution for links the other day.
We purged all my old links.. but i had an entire link library built up and organized. it purged those as well as the feeds. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, Is this the Anoto you were talking about? on Apr. 10
N1ckR
ouch !Is it possible to to limit the number of links in a section ? on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, sorry for this collateral effect, I was not aware of this library.
Nick, we manually 'DELETE from yacs_links', this is the reason why...
Stephan, maybe you have a backup copy of the database you could restore? on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
No problem Bernard. I wasn't either. I just figured you should know. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, you are a poet among poets... on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
my main concern is that setting up links to purge on a time basis will not work
unless you can mark the links that are to be purged and those that are to be saved. on Apr. 10
NJ
Yes, this is the correct Anoto.................they have a big push for routing the Anoto pen files (these extensions are called .pgc files) over mobile devices. I could imagine YACS being used a point for mobile users to log on to in order to download a ".pgc file router" onto their enterprise mobile phone. This could be tied into a "mobile YACS" chat and we are all in new buissness. on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
http://feeds.feedburner.com/DiggingCheeseOutOfCarpet?format=xml that is the type of xml feed that isn't working. for some reason. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Stephan, yacs does limit the number of links added through feeds. However, the previous versions allow for "link-spamming" through pseudo-clicks, and this explains why the table of links has grown so far at many YACS sites.
Steve, you are a brilliant person, aren't you? Please look at files/view.php to look at what we could do with .pgc files and let me know what I have to add to the script... Thanks.
Nick, are you still using yacs for the shop?
Stephan, the file is not properly encoded, that's why. Look at the page source for the feed...
Deb, are you using yacs as well? on Apr. 10
NJ
Bernard, I am an idiot , but I am looking at files/view.php......interesting. on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, you are not an idiot, and I am looking for your suggestions in some time... on Apr. 10
NJ
Deb works with me.............she had to go for a minute to help client. on Apr. 10
N1ckR
Bernard, no shop, we have a baby instead on Apr. 10
Bernard
Nick, yes, I remember! Does she deserve a web place? on Apr. 10
N1ckR
Stephan : http://www.ngr78.co.uk/server-test/41
:( on Apr. 10
Bernard
Ok, this meeting is going to an end, and I have been very happy to host you tonight despite the horrible service provided by Blue Host. on Apr. 10
NJ
Bernard and YACS guys, thank you for this chat and your time. on Apr. 10
Bernard
We will definitely repeat such meetings in the future, with a larger audience hopefully. Let me know your suggestions on schedule, topics to cover, etc. on Apr. 10
N1ckR
roughly once a month ? on Apr. 10
NJ
Goodnite all on Apr. 10
Bernard
Nick, ok, let's assume this as a first start. on Apr. 10
Deb smith
have a good evening on Apr. 10
Bernard
Steve, Deb, Tof, Stephan, Nick, thank you for your involvement, and take care.
I will stop this chat in one minute, good night/evening everybody. Bye on Apr. 10
AnsteyER
Thank you! on Apr. 10
