I would like to see multiple options for photo galleries.
On one of my sites we use an a bit of ajax that has a nice behavior. http://www.massbarfoundation.org/photo-gallery
I like that a lot.
I also think my members are comfortable with the flickr and photobucket behaviors, as well as myspace and facebook.
My suggestion would be to have page options for photogallery behaviors and layout. I generally like the new lightbox effect, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

I also agree with you. As much as I like the lightbox, it would not be my first choice either.
You will be glad to know that I am working on better photo gallery soon (this month). I am not sure of the exact specifications yet (it will be simple to start with, depends what I can get working), take a look at Image Gallery and Image display.
This will probably be an article overlay. I am also going to look at making a section layout as well, but that will probably not be this month.
