Some minor config features
There are a couple of little options that might be really helpful to some types of communities.
Hey Bernard & Developers,
First of all, so far, loving YACS. There are minor issues i have with it - simply because i'm using it in a slightly odd way. But really, it's been nice. I also like that I'm not having to fudge with the code, a task which I am very limited at.
Ok, that said, something that would be helpful in my community - are some config options on the user directory. Users by alphabetical, Users by last login, Users by last update, Users by type/status (more an admin feature, but actually, sorting out the administrators on a seperate page if desired would be nice, with a short description of their role on the site/job) I don't really see this as a giant addition, but more a useful config option or view for that page.
Next, Personal spaces. I"m looking at having thousands of members with literally dozens of subsections in each of their personal spaces. My members have been most confused by the fact that they have to create their own personal space. I think when a member confirms, the option should be there for the personal space to be automagically created. Also, I think it'd be fantastic for the default on new content for a member to be their personal space.
Additionally, it might be helpful if when a member goes to create a page, only section where they author/own would be listed. As i'm having more and more sections on the site, members are increasingly confused where to put their stuff, and often unable to find their sections in the giant list. Generally, i just tell them to to to that page and add from there, but I think you can see my point.
Another thing, m4a audio files should be added to the supported audio formats i think, at least added to the default list of file-types supported and allowed. (I appreciated that you give us the ability to add as we go -- i'm merely pointing it out.
I would be interested in having favorites for my members. So that upon looking at something, they could add it to favorites, and them others might see what that person enjoys.
It might also be interesting for a person to be able to see what they've rated in the past (and even perhaps their ratings)

Moi-meme![]() from Entre chaise et clavier... 1392 posts | I'm agree about points 1, 4 and 5: " Users by alphabetical, Users by last login, Users by last update, Users by type/status (more an admin feature, but actually, sorting out the administrators on a seperate page if desired would be nice, with a short description of their role on the site/job) " " I would be interested in having favorites for my members. " " It might also be interesting for a person to be able to see what they've rated in the past (and even perhaps their ratings) "
But for the fourth point, isn't the 'watching list' (in profiles) already appropriate ? An article which we've decided to look by notification of updates or comments is a little similar to a favorite...

AnsteyER![]() 301 posts | You know, i thought the watch list just sent us a message if we're watching it. I didn't know people could see our watch list. In that case you're right it'd be redundant. There is also a SLIGHT semantic difference -- on my site, a writing site, someone might watch something which is not at lal their favorite. Favorite meaning -- they like it a lot and want everyone to know they like it -- a statement of taste and a recommendation to read that work. Where as the watch list is really, "I have some interest in this particular subject, article or work, whether i like it or not" -- it's a bit of quibble I suppose, but I think worth noting as a distinction. |
Moi-meme![]() from Entre chaise et clavier... 1392 posts | You are right. The semantic difference is an important element for a multi-functionnality CMS as yacs. |
| Bernard from nearby-an-airport Associate, 6728 posts | Thank you very much for these suggestions. Since YACS is aiming to become a Web 2.0 platform of choice, we definitely have to consider thousands of users, each managing a dozen of sections or so, etc. The mechanism you are talking about to select a section at writing times already exists, but is limited to remote bloggers. When you use a blogging tool, such as w.bloggar, sections you are editor of are listed first. Your suggestion to have this also for regular users makes a lot of sense. I will look at these ideas carefully, and each of them will probably deserve a dedicated page in the development backlog, which is the place that "feeds" software developers. |
