With this release YACS starts to support mobile devices. This release also features some improvements, and a couple of bug fixes:
YACS offers now a straightforward support of AvantGo technology. You can download and read in your Palm, or PocketPC device, most recent news from your preferred YACS server. A page to be posted soon in the Syndication section to show you how to proceed.
The home page can now support AvantGo fetch natively. Yes, this means that the URL used to build an AvantGo channel is, simply enough, the home page of your server.
A new template has been created for each of our reference skins in order to support small computing devices (see skins/yetanothercommunitysystem/template_mobile.php). At the moment only the home page (index.php) and article views (articles/view.php) actually use this template, and this is enough to support AvantGo. In the next future mobile support will be extended to other scripts as well to access and manage pages interactively from any small IP-enabled computer.
In May RSS news feeding has been almost completely revisited. This month we are adding the ability to ban some servers. Also, a default category is created to collect news if none has been configured. Lastly, several bugs have been fixed. The net result of all these efforts is that YACS is becoming a simple and strong platform for news aggregation. Look at the smart news integration at our home page. Also, look at our category dedicated to External News.
Newsfeeds can now be tested directly from any server profile (servers/test.php). Useful to check the validity of a new RSS link.
Some source of news (not feeders) can now be banned through the configuration panel for feeders (feeds/configure.php). Useful to stop some forms of "RSS spamming".
The code to create on-demand archive files has been streamlined (see shared/zipfile.php). Downloading files attached to an article is now faster (files/fetch_all.php). Same result for the construction of the yacs archive (scripts/build.php).
