Setting up a reference server

avatarBoen, Jan -- on Jul. 11 2006
Since I have some problems with downloading the updates from the YACS site i'm trying to do this.
Hello,

I've installed a brand new YACS instance (6.6.1) in the following location www.sbv54.net/simwar.
On another instance still runing YACS 6.1 (www.sbv54.net/keva) I've edited the parameters.include.php file to point to the ref server www.sbv54.net/simwar
Alas this is the error I get: "Unable to get http://www.sbv54.net/simwar/yacs/scripts/fetch.php?script=footprints.php. Please configure again."
When I check the path is correct and fetch.php is there.
Any clue what might be wrong?

Thanks a million

Hello,

To make an upgrade reference server, you should have a '/yacs/' based root website and create a '/yacs/scripts/reference' folder including the yacs scripts tree.

Yacs try to find http://www.sbv54.net/simwar/yacs/..., but your simwar website has no '/yacs/' subfolder.

Maybe it could be quicker to try an upgrade with a local .tgz Yacs archive ?

GnapZ: How can I do the tgz upgrade with a YACS 6.1 server?

Jan B : I use the tgz archive for manual upgrades or to create a reference server quickly. I upload the file by FTP on /yacs/scripts and make a new subfolder 'yacs'. Then i use UserMin (for remote websites) to extract the scripts. At the end i rename '/yacs/scripts/yacs' with '/yacs/scripts/reference' and the new upgrade server is ready. By this way, you are shure that your reference scripts are exactly the same as the Yetanother reference scripts.

I didn't speak about the archive upgrade function of Yacs beacause it works only since the 6.6 version, not in the 6.1

GnapZ: Is it possible to give a bit more complete information. I've tried and I've failed. The error message stays the same. Version of YACS is 6.1.

Jan B : I will try to explain but i don't have a good english ...

To make an upgrade, Yacs try to connect a Yacs server where the reference scripts have a path like "www.domain.com/yacs/scripts/reference."

The refence scripts must be on a Yacs who have an Url_to_root with .../yacs/.

The best way is to make a "www.svb54.net/yacs/scripts/reference" folder and upload all the 6.6.2 archive (extracted localy) without the "/yacs/" main folder (only sub-folders and scripts under this one).

Then you have to put "www.svb54.net" as the new reference server in your upgrade settings of Keva.

That's all, you can begin an new upgrade of Keva based on svb54 reference server.

You could use Simwar but you need to put it in a simwar/yacs/ subfolder and change your /simwar/ path in your skin and in some fields of the database, otherwise some script will fail (to find images and others). That's more complicated but i did and it works.

Usualy, it is a good idea to keep a Yacs website in a /yacs/ folder and the others in their own folders.

I made a mirror of Yetanother if you want to try your upgrade, the url is www.sxmpc.org .

I hope this will help.

GnapZ: Thanks for yesterday's explanation but there must be something that is either missing or which I misunderstood.
This is what I did:
1- created a subdomain called home.sbv54.net
2- created empty folders yacs/scripts
3- unzipped yacs into home.sbv54.net/yacs/scripts/reference
4- tried to update my site called sbv54.net/sbv54 from the reference server home.sbv54.net
RESULT = Errors... (error line 20,....)
Then I did the following:
1- delete the yacs folder
2- installed yacs into home.sbv54.net/yacs
3- unzipped yacs into home.sbv54.net/yacs/scripts/reference
4- deleted all files from the home.sbv54.net/yacs directory so only the directories and their content were left
5- tried to update my site called sbv54.net/sbv54 from the reference server home.sbv54.net
RESULT = Errors... (about installing yacs correctly)
This is the current situation.

What did I do wrong?

Jan B : OK, so i think that Yacs need a complete server installed on /yacs/. If you can, try to install a new one and put the archive like you did in /yacs/scripts/reference.

Just before, try with only a footprint.php in /yacs/.

I made my own reference server but i did it with an url_to_root "/yacs/", i didn't try with an other name.

Jan, just a silly question : have you created the reference store on the reference server ?

To do that, you have to visit the Control Panel, click on the 'Scripts' link, then on the 'Build' link below title.

On success this will create the footprints.php required by client instances of the reference server.
